£1,100,000
A two storey Georgian Mansion, G Doric Portico, painted stucco and slate roof set in thirty two acres of land. It is very rare that a property of such magnificence comes on the market in Scotland. Thought to have been built in the 1700s it was first occupied by Sir Alexander Fraser, the brother in law of Robert the Bruce and in 1780 James Farquhar built the present mansion. Johnston Lodge dominates the Howe of Mearns and holds a major part in Scottish History. Purchasers would not be buying a home, but a piece of British Heritage.
Johnston Tower stands on the Hill of Garvock overlooking the Mansion, and was built by the owner of Johnston Lodge, from excess building materials from the Lodge, to commemorate Wellington's defeat of Napoleon in the Peninsular War. It is thought to be built on top of an old Druid's Cairn. Johnston Tower's famous outline was used in the linen designs woven on the Laurencekirk looms and became World renowned. It is now the badge emblem of the Laurencekirk scholars. Chalybeate Well (also famous) an old mineral well situated on the rear track to the property, was built to provide the water requirements for the residents of Johnston Lodge in the early 1800s. Laurencekirk was also World renowned for making snuff boxes with a special airtight hinge, known as the Laurencekirk Hinge. It was Lord Gardenstone the third owner of Johnston Lodge that succeeded in making the settlement of Laurencekirk into the Burgh of Barony. This Baronial Title is in place and may be considered with the property sale.
